How to get a free Gemini API key (Google AI Studio)
To use StudIA’s AI features you need a personal Google API key. You create it in a few minutes in Google AI Studio with your Google account, and it stays under your control.
Steps
- Open Google AI Studio and sign in with your Google account.
- Click “Create API key”. If asked, choose or create a project.
- Copy the generated key.
- Open StudIA, accept the Terms and Privacy Policy and paste the key into the field.
- You can change or delete it at any time in Settings.
Keeping your key safe
- Treat it like a password: don’t share it or publish it online or in code repositories.
- In StudIA the key stays in your device’s browser and is only sent to Google. On a shared computer, turn off “Remember the key on this device”: it will then be kept only for the open tab.
- If you suspect it has been compromised, delete it in Google AI Studio and create a new one.
Limits and costs
The Gemini API free tier has request and usage limits that Google sets and may change over time: you can find them in AI Studio. On the free service Google may also use submitted content to improve its products, so avoid processing confidential material.
If you exceed the limits, generation stops with an error: wait and try again later. In StudIA’s Settings you can also choose the model and, optionally, a fallback model.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Gemini API key really free?
Google offers a free tier for the Gemini API, with usage limits. Terms and limits are Google’s and may change: check them in Google AI Studio.
Can I use the same key on several devices?
Yes, you can paste it on every device you use. Keep in mind that each device where you enter it is one more place where the key is stored.
What if my key isn’t accepted?
Check that you copied the whole key, with no spaces. If the problem continues, create a new one in AI Studio. If the error appears during generation, it may be the request limit: wait and try again.
